چکیده

Formative constructs must influence two or more distinct outcome variables for meaningful tests of the formative conceptualization. Because the construct mediates the effects of its indicators, the indicators must have effects on the outcomes that are proportional to their effects on the formative construct itself. This constraint has important implications for developing and testing formative models. This study demonstrates the existence of the constraint, shows that researchers must consider proportionality as a criterion for evaluating the formative conceptualization, provides examples of indicators having different effects and interpretations depending on the outcome variables used, discusses the selection of outcomes to provide rigorous rather than trivial tests of the formative conceptualization, and contends that the formative nature of constructs cannot be justified in isolation from the consideration of outcome variables. In addition, the study demonstrates the importance of considering how the scaling of the formative construct influences the significance of the effects in the model. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. مدل معادلات ساختاری و کاربرد آن در مطالعات روانشناسی: یک مطالعه مروری

Introduction: Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a very general statistical modeling technique, which is widely used in the behavioral sciences. It can be viewed as a combination of path analysis, regression and factor analysis.  One of the prominent features of this method is the ability to compute direct, indirect and total effects, as well as latent variable modeling. Methods: This sy...

Structural Equation Models

Although the literature on alternatives to effect indicators is growing, there has been little attention given to evaluating causal and composite (formative) indicators. This paper provides an overview of this topic by contrasting ways of assessing the validity of effect and causal indicators in structural equation models (SEMs). It also draws a distinction between composite (formative) indicat...

The problem of measurement model misspecification in behavioral and organizational research and some recommended solutions.

The purpose of this study was to review the distinction between formative- and reflective-indicator measurement models, articulate a set of criteria for deciding whether measures are formative or reflective, illustrate some commonly researched constructs that have formative indicators, empirically test the effects of measurement model misspecification using a Monte Carlo simulation, and recomme...

Differential Effects of Omitting Formative Indicators: A Comparison of Techniques

Research examining the formative specification of constructs has highlighted the need for researchers to capture all relevant causes of a construct of interest. However, the consequences of omitting a formative indicator have not been thoroughly examined. Given that one of the commonly employed techniques for modeling formatively specified constructs, Partial Least Squares, implicitly assumes t...

Advancing Formative Measurement Models

Formative measurement models were first introduced in the literature more than forty years ago and the discussion about their methodological contribution has been increasing since the 1990s. However, the use of formative indicators for construct measurement in empirical studies is still scarce. This paper seeks to encourage the thoughtful application of formative models by (a) highlighting the ...
